StartLogic Sucks!
Main Page
Something else worth noting... Most of the so-called hosting review sites are in it strictly for personal gain. Startlogic pays $100.00 for each new customer someone sends them. If you read a glowing review of this company and see links to the Startlogic website, look carefully at the links. If they look something like this:

http://customer.startlogic.com/transaction.php?APID=2&affID=###################

That's called an affiliate link. If you click on that link and then sign up with Startlogic, the website that sent you there receives a $100.00 commission. Cash money has a tendency to cloud objectivity in some cases, so be wary...

The best places, bar none, to find reliable information on any host are webmaster forums and message boards. A couple of good ones that I like:

Webmaster World - Tons of help and good advice here. You won't find much about hosting per se, but you will find a 100% uncorruptable, well-moderated haven where you can ask any question you like and get qualified answers within hours. Without doubt, a 5-star asset to the web design community.

SitePoint there's a good hosting forum here but watch out for commercial posts... ask questions yourself and see if you get good answers.

editor's note: Many Startlogic reviewers wish to remain anonymous when posting their reviews. In some cases their websites are still being hosted by Startlogic and they are in the process of attempting to move away from them and cancel future billing, which occurs automatically and often in spite of the customers repeated requests to be terminated. Simply stated, and I know this from personal communication with many of the reviewer's who have posted here, they fear retaliation from this company. While I do think it lends credibility to a review when the reviewer allows their name and website address to be published, I will certainly honor all requests to remain anonymous.

The Quest to Cancel

"I have, like many of you, been unsuccessful in my attempts to cancel my account with this company. Somehow my account was set to rebill for another year, I each month I get another charge.

Web site "control panel" : no option to cancel

Phone Support: can easily reach a sales representative in seconds. No account representative can be reached... eternal hold times. I have tried multiple times and have given up in frustration. I asked a sales representative if I could speak to a manager, and was told that one wasn't available. The best the sales rep could do was to remove my credit card from the account.

Not knowing what else to do, I have today filed complaints both with the Phoenix, AZ Better Business Bureau and the Federal Trade Commission. I hope that any of you who have had similar problems to please do the same. With enough consumer complaints, perhaps some action will be taken and this company will adjust their practices.

I strongly urge anyone considering web hosting to steer clear of this company."

"I've been with startlogic since 05, and have had problems with them ever since.

Here's a sample of the problems:

Site goes down, they restore the site with old backups which push my site back into the stone age.

Constantly messing with my Mysql databases and making them NOT WORK

Horrible tech support that has a horrible case of GOD Syndrome, with their constant "down talking" and assumption that the customer knows nothing

Irregular hosting speeds

LOOOOOOONG hold times for tech support

And the latest:

Transition nightmares, transitioned my site after they told me last night they would wait for me to call them, after I get done manually testing the site, but they pointed the URLs to the new server and half of my site wont work now, and they have no solution, though they caused the issues.

Automatically charging me for additional years of hosting

The list goes on, I'm stuck with them for now cause I just dont have time to switch to a new host."

"Alright so it all started yesterday. I decided it was time to start my own blog, which I guess isn't really new to me. I've dealt with Wordpress and such many times before. So I looked up something like, "the best web hosting" on google. Turns out StartLogic was recommended on about 5 different web hosting reviews sites. So I said hey, why not try it out. So I signed up and the first thing I noticed was that they had already billed me for the whole year, when I had agreed to a monthly fee. From there it just got worse and worse. The VDECK was single handedly one of THE MOST sluggish control panels I have ever used. I kept getting errors about how the connection had timed out and so forth, while every other website I went to worked great. Then I tried to install Wordpress but I got the message that said "You do not have CGI enabled. Please enable CGI to prior to installing applications." So what did I do, I enabled CGI. I got a message then that said "Your cgi-bin directory will be available within the next several minutes." So I thought Ok, I'll just wait a few minutes and everything will be up and running. I left the computer after about an hour went by and got into bed. I woke up this morning and the thing STILL SAID "You do not have CGI enabled. Please enable CGI to prior to installing applications." I was pissed. After getting on the supposed "Live Chat" and waiting about 30 minutes for "A***** N*****" to respond, all she could tell me after about an hour of me asking questions and getting completely irrelevant answers was that she was going to have to ask a member of our team who specializes in this issue to take care of this for you. I couldn't believe my eyes. I asked how long it would take for things to get figured out and she said 24-48 hours. That was when I decided to do a little bit more of an in-depth search about StartLogic and found this site. After reading people's horror stories, I decided to get out while I could. I called the guy to cancel my account and was put on hold for about 20 minutes. The cell phone I was on died and I had to call back only to be put on hold AGAIN. I finally got it through to him that I was extremely unsatisfied with the quality of their service and wanted to cancel my account. He chuckled every time I said something. StartLogic is single handedly the worst web host I have ever dealt with. Never even consider signing up with them or I promise you they will screw you over BIG-TIME."

"So I go searching around for a hosting site for my website back in August of 2007 and I come across a couple sites that list the "10 Best Webhosting Sites". I said to myself, "Hmm...Startlogic.com seems to be in the top ten on all these sites and it's pretty cheap." Little did I know, it would be a disaster. They claim to have "The Best 24/7 customer service" around. I have tried at least ten times to contact someone live via email AND telephone, and I believe I got to them once. And the time I was able to contact someone on there live support, he said he had to leave after 3 minutes of talking with me. When I tried to call to cancel my account, I had my home phone waiting on the line for 45 minutes, yet no one answered. I emailed them back in March about canceling my account with them and they said they would come August '08. I want to leave this company as fast as I can. This company is sick and should be ashamed of what they are doing to people. There whole business is based on lies. They don't care about the customer AT ALL, they just want your money. PLEASE BEWARE"

301 redirect error from hell

"I wont give you my real name because I'm stuck...I have over 80 domains with Startlogic and have been dealing with a 301 redirect problem for months..

They fix it, then another problem crops up...then they fix it and then delete the fix and another problem crops up...

Every time I call the 800 #, the person that answers the phone thinks they're helping and screw it up more...

I'm in hell and my website is having a hell of a time being up because of them... Level 2 support is a joke, I practically have to threaten to sue them to get those people to look into a problem and when they do...its only fixed for a week or two..."

Uncertain Credit Card Security

"***Warning*** Fair warning to anyone who uses there credit card to register with StartLogic.

My gripe with StartLogic they have an terrible policy when it comes to protecting consumer credit card information.

To give a quick background how I came across this situation. During the sign up phrase or after the registration, my account was immediately sent to security. This was due to my mailing or address for my credit card was a United States address, however my IP (or Internet connection) was from another country.

This arised alarm bells with StartLogic and StartLogic reply was that they wanted a copy of the front and back on the credit card faxed to them. The troubles I had with this request as to date they have not stated what StartLogic does with this information and what type of security they will provide to the customer for submitting this information.

My concern is if an image copy of the credit card is scanned into the computer?

StartLogic will not state what they do with this information once its submitted which arises huge security concerns.

Reviewing my credit card holder agreement the liability of any fraudulant charges is up for debate as the card holder agreement can only guarantee to dispute any fraudulant charges AFTER you've contracted and informed your credit card company. Anything that was fraudulant BEFORE you've contacted your credit card company is up for debate and review leaving the consumer still on the hook.

StartLogic has some reference on there credit card security on their Privacy Policy under section 14.

The problem is StartLogic makes a loose statement in section 14 by stating, "... we cannot guarantee that our security measures will prevent third-party "hackers" from illegally obtaining this information."

After being beaten down by StartLogic that they will not activate my account without a copy of the front and back of my credit card. I blatantly refused on the numerous responses with StartLogic to fax a copy of the front and back of my credit card. I even offered to try an alternative solution for payment such as using a my Verified Paypal account which has been deemed nonsufficient by StartLogic.

***Warning*** Therefore fair warning to anyone who uses there credit card to register with StartLogic."

Dedicated SSL

"Hi,

Great site. I'm thinking of creating my own website: die.startlogic.com. I was so naive when I first came across startlogic.com. I even read the reviews here at startlogicsucks.com and thought, "Those are the exceptions". Now I know that there is only ONE startlogic experience. The experience of waking up knowing a demon has your site, your countless hours of work, in its hands.

If you are the type of person who would let a convicted child molestor take care of your children then startlogic.com is your ideal host.

Last week I paid $99 (way way too much) for dedicated ssl (startlogic does not allow 3rd party dedicated ssl). Today I have deep and meaningful relationships with all the startlogic support staff. S*****, H****, K****, they are all my friends. We talk daily. I ask them to fix things. They say it's being worked on. And then we end our conversation both knowing full well that nothing is being done.

Anyway, whatever you do, even if it means paying a little extra, find another host. Wait a week until you get your next paycheck and pay yourself by investing in a server that won't destoy your business."
